Cancun Dining: A beginners’ guide

With both sweet and savory dishes, Cancún’s distict flavors distinguish it from other cuisines. Cancún dining uses local produce, exotic spices, and fresh seafood to create an assortment of dishes. Cancún Cuisine

Isolated on a peninsula away from the rest of Mexico, Cancún has its own unique flavors and spices with distinctive ingredients such as sour oranges (for marinades), chaya (Mexican spinach), banana leaves and achiote (an earthy and slightly bitter spice). Cancún dining has something for everyone, including sweet, spicy and savory dishes.

Local Dishes

If you decide to try some of the favorite dishes of Cancún dining, you can’t go wrong with the following dishes:

Sopa de Lima (lime soup) is one the most famous dishes from Cancún and the surrounding area.  Unlike its name implies, Sopa de Lima doesn’t have a noticeable lime taste. In fact, this soup is far more like a spicy chicken tortilla soup than a lime soup, because the habanero peppers out number limes.  It’s both hearty and refreshing.

Frijoles con Puerco (black bean and pork stew) is a warm dish with a consistency somewhere between soup and stew.  It’s a healthy and hearty dish that’s often served with rice for Cancún dining.  If you plan on having a long night, this dish will give you the energy to last for hours.

Panuchas a well-known specialty from Cancún, is most similar to a tostada. It has a deep-fried corn tortilla topped with black-bean paste, lettuce, shredded meat and pink pickled onions. It’s a great meal for Cancún dining on hot days.

Cochinita Pibil  (buried pig) is perfect for carnivorous BBQ lovers.  A suckling pig or cut of pork meat is marinated in sour oranges and achiote, a bitter, earthy spice and wrapped in banana leaf.  It’s then lowered into a pit oven in the ground and slowly roasted at a low temperature.

Pescado Tikin Xic is similar to Conchita Pibil, but instead of pork, fish is seasoned with achiote, wrapped in banana leaf with onions and tomatoes and cooked to perfection on the grill. When to Dine in Cancún

Desayuno (breakfast) is often just a sweet role, oatmeal and milk or Coffee, but if you wake up later, it’s possible to try larger Mexican breakfasts.  Local favorite for big breakfasts are Huevos a la Mexicana, chopped tomatoes, chile and onions in scrambled eggs.  Another popular Cancún dining dish for breakfast are Huevos Rancheros which consist of fried eggs on a tortilla with a tomato sauce.

Almuerzo (lunch) can be hard to find in Cancún because many locals close their businesses and head home to eat with their families.  Lunch is the largest meal of the day in Mexico.  If you need to find a restaurant during lunch, visit the hotel section of town where restaurants stay open all day.

Cena (dinner) is usually a smaller meal for Mexicans, but in Cancún dining, dinner is often the biggest meal.  Since the city has many tourists and foreigners who traditionally eat larger dinners, Cancún serves large dinners.  The best Cancún restaurants are open for dinner and serve a wide variety of local and regional dishes.
