Is Cancún safe for tourists?
Jul 28 , 2011
Cancún tourism has been affected by drug wars, political issues, and several high profile murders. Tourists have begun to ask themselves, "Is Cancún safe?" and others have ruled it out altogether as a vacation destination. The good news is that Cancún is still safe, and there are few things visitors can do to make sure they have a safe, a stress-free vacation.
Touristy Areas
Is all of Cancún safe? Yes and No. Like most cities, Cancún is safe during the day, but visitors should use caution at night. A little common sense goes a long way. The tourist areas tend to be the safest, as they are the most tracked areas. The hotel zone and the beaches near the hotel zone are probably some of the safest places in the world. The center of town (El Centro) tends to be safe for tourists during the day, but it isn’t as safe at night.
Stay in Groups
Is Cancún safe to wander around alone at night in? No. The key is to stay in groups and avoid poorly-lit and deserted areas. Do not go on the beaches after dark, unless you are going to a specific, night-time beach event. (Many attacks occur on deserted beaches after dark). Similarly, be sure to keep friend close when drinking and partying. Cancún might be safe, but not all of its visitors are well intentioned. Know the people you’re partying with and don’t wander off with strangers.
Public Transportation
Is Cancún safe when using public transportation? Yes, but use caution. Cancún has good public transportation and tends to be quite safe. To ensure that you avoid bad situations though, take first-class public transportation; in other words, find high-quality buses for tourists. You’ll not only feel safer, you’ll also avoid many pick pockets and other petty criminals.
Do not accept unsolicited rides from drivers without official credentials.
Emergencies
Cancún has adopted 911 as the number for tourists to use in case of emergency. (066 is the emergency number for locals). If you are stuck in a bad situation or have witnessed a crime, don’t hesitate to call 911; it was introduced to help tourists.
Petty Crimes
Like any large city, visitors in Cancún must watch out for petty criminals and pick pockets. Don’t carry much cash you and leave valuables in your safe at the hotel. Wearing excessive jewelry or flaunting money can sometimes be an invitation to thieves; avoid it. If you’re uncomfortable using a normal wallet or purse, a tourist wallet with secret pouches is a good option. Keep your eyes open, look around and don’t take your money out in highly-congested areas.
Is Cancún safe? Yes, Cancún is safe; just be aware of your situation and surroundings. At night stay with friends and avoid poorly-lit areas.
